January 19, 2011 - Brentwood, Tennessee
American Pathology Partners (APP) announced today the acquisition of the laboratory operations of Palm Beach Pathology in West Palm Beach, Florida effective January 17, 2011. Consistent with APP’s model, the transaction involved the acquisition of the laboratory assets while the pathology medical practice remains independent and continues to be solely owned and managed by the pathologists.
“We are very pleased to be expanding the company’s footprint into Florida, particularly with such a well-regarded and longstanding group as Palm Beach Pathology” commented Robert Yeager, chief executive officer of American Pathology Partners. Thanasis Papaioanu, chief development officer, added “Palm Beach Pathology, with its subspecialized pathologists and a well-earned reputation for quality, service and expertise, fits very well into our approach of providing broad and deep subspecialty coverage, and offering a superior service to our physician clients and their patients”.
Dr. David Abis, chairman of Palm Beach Pathology, P.A. commented “American Pathology Partners represents a good fit to the needs of the group, as we seek to further invest in the growth of the laboratory, and to expand our service offering and market presence. We evaluated several strategic options and felt that American Pathology Partners, with its track record and pathologist-friendly approach, presented the most compelling path forward.”
Palm Beach Pathology was founded by Dr. V. Marklin Johnson, a native Floridian who became part of Good Samaritan Hospital and retired in 1983 after serving as Chief of Staff for 18 years. Dr. Johnson studied with some of the best in the field of pathology, including cytopathology pioneers Dr. George Papanicolaou and Dr. John K. Frost of The Johns Hopkins Hospital. This high science pedigree was at the core of Palm Beach Pathology's early beginnings in 1934 and throughout its evolution. Nearly 80 years later, the modern Palm Beach Pathology has emerged as a leading pathology laboratory serving physicians, hospitals, and surgery centers in many Florida healthcare communities. The practice consists of a team of highly-trained board-certified pathologists with additional subspecialty certifications in cytopathology, hematopathology and dermatopathology.
